Chapter Three

Even though I’ve only been here in Ghana for two days, it already feels great. We’re helping out at a free public hospital that runs in partnership with medical facilities all over the world. The hospital where I work recently opened a program to join, and we were both the only volunteering teams to come.

During the rest of the first flight, and throughout the majority of the second one, Daniel and I got really close. I don’t mean that I’ve forgotten everything that he did to me, but he did apologize, and I now think he intended it.

Here, he can be himself, since no one knows him or his father. However, he still hasn’t fully let go of the fear that keeps holding him from being himself. I feel him trying to get close to me, but at the same time, I know that he’s overthinking what that proximity would implies.

I mean, we're only here for two weeks, maybe he wants to love me, but still thinks about what will happen when we get home. And I’m not going to let myself get hurt again. Especially not by him. It’s hard to keep him distant since my feelings for him are also getting stronger by the second. Especially having to work with him every day and even sleep in the same room.

It’s not easy, but it’s necessary. Maybe if Daniel weren’t so concerned about what other people think, I could give him a chance. Carla and I have also gotten closer again. She still hasn’t told me what Daniel’s father has on her, but it’s also none of my business.

We’ve been working non-stop while settling in at the same time, so we haven’t even had a chance to be all together. Even with Daniel and I sharing the same room, we’re both so tired by the end of the day that we can barely talk to each other.

Today, however, we’re not working. We are all going to explore the city. My watch is sitting on top of my suitcase – which is also my bedside table – and it’s showing me it is twenty minutes past twelve. We’ve let ourselves sleep late since we’re going without a tour and we can go alone.

The room we’re in is small, but with enough size to fit two single beds. Daniel is sleeping in the other bed, to my left. We’re all staying in a shared compound made available by the local hospital. It’s obviously not much, but it’s way more than we were expecting.

Daniel growled in his bed and turned toward me. His eyes were still close.

“Good morning,” he said to me.

“How do you know I’m up?”

“You’re too quiet. You move a lot when you sleep.”

Finally, he opened his eyes. I have to be honest, seeing him smile the first thing in the morning, with his sleepy face, scruffy beard, and messy hair, is a sight that I would like to watch more often.

“How are you?” He asks me.

“I’m better. Much rested! How about you?”

“I’m good too.
